From the smallest sets to the biggest ones, everyone has a different role in creating the photos being made during the shoot. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Photographer: The photographer not only takes the photos, but directs the talent and crew to achieve the desired images for the client. On small sets, the photographer may be in charge of every detail from creative to the logistics of the shoot, like transportation, lunch and scheduling. on big sets, the photographer is usually only responsible for directing the creative crew and talent, while producers, production and crew handle the logistics.

Producer: the producer oversees and executes logistics of the entire shoot. Some producers contribute to the creative direction. Much of the producer’s work is done ahead of time, like securing locations or studios, scheduling, booking crew and talent, booking equipment, transportation and meals.

Art Director: the AD represents the creative interests of the client. They work closely with the photographer to make the images meet the needs of the client and usually pick the final selects that will be used.

Photo Assistant: Photo assistants are in charge of the lighting and photography equipment. They setup the camera, lighting and scene per the photographer’s direction.

Digital Tech: the Tech keeps the cameras, computers, monitors, digital accessories running while organizing and backing up the digital files as the photos are shot throughout the day.

Hair Stylist: the hair stylist does the hair of the subject before their photo is taken and keeps their hair looking good on set.

Makeup Artist: the MUA does the makeup of subject and keeps them looking fresh on set

Stylist/Wardrobe: The stylist is responsible for the clothes the subject will be wearing. They build the looks by choosing different clothes to go together, prepare and organize the clothes.

Stylist Assistant: The stylist assistant helps the stylist prepare, maintain and organize the clothes.

Prop Stylist: prop stylist source, organize and style the props

Production Assistant: the PAs help the producer and crew with any task they may need.
